Southampton bowed out of the FA Cup on Wednesday night, at the fifth round stage.

Making the long trip to Anfield from St Mary’s, the Saints were beaten 3-0 by Liverpool to end their run in the competition.

A Lewis Koumas strike and second half double from Jayden Danns secured a place in the quarter finals for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

By contrast, Russell Martin has now seen his Southampton side lose four of their last five games across all competitions.

However, there were still positives for the Saints to take from that trip to Anfield. Indeed, some of those came off the pitch, as well as on it.

Southampton fans praised for Anfield backing

There was a packed out away end at Anfield for that game on Wednesday night.

In total, around 5,500 Southampton fans made the long trip to Merseyside to watch their team take on Liverpool.

Despite the disappointment of the result, those fans remained until the very end, voicing their support for their team throughout.

That is something that did not go unnoticed. Taking to X at full time, Daily Echo journalist Alfie House posted a video of the club’s fans showing their appreciation for their side’s efforts.

Alongside it, he wrote: “Can’t fault these lot. 3-0 defeat and still here, supporting their club.”

Southampton’s fans face another away trip on Saturday afternoon, when their side travel to St Andrew’s to face Birmingham City in the Championship.

Saints supporters can be proud

Those who made the long trip to Anfield on Wednesday can rightly be proud of their efforts.

That is a long trip to make at any time, let alone in the middle of a working week.

Even so, there were plenty who did just that, despite the fact it was always going to be a big ask for Southampton to get something from this game.

Despite that, Martin’s team were backed throughout, even though things did indeed not work out on the pitch.

Given the sticky patch that Southampton are going through right now, that support could be vital in helping to lift the players and turning results around.

As a result, you have to hope that backing continues in such a way, over the next few months.

It should also be noted that even with the result, aspects of the performance provide cause for optimism for Southampton.

That ought to give these supporters reason to continue to back them, if they can deliver those sort of showings again.

If that happens, then even with the result, this could still turn into a potentially pivotal moment in the season for Southampton.
