Southampton are set to turn their attentions away from the battle for Championship promotion for a brief time on Wednesday.

Following a run of three defeats in their last four in the league, the Saints must now deal with the prospect of the FA Cup fifth round.

That will see the Championship side make the long trip to Anfield, to take on Liverpool in front of the ITV cameras.

The hosts of course, come into this on the back of their League Cup final win over Chelsea on Sunday afternoon.

Even so, Southampton boss Russell Martin clearly appears to be relishing going up against the Reds, and in particular, his opposite number Jurgen Klopp.

Russell Martin a big admirer of Jurgen Klopp

This is of course Klopp’s final season in charge of Liverpool. Earlier this year, the German announced he would be leaving the club at the end of the campaign.

Having won the League Cup over the weekend, victory over Southampton would take him another step closer to bowing out with a quadruple of trophies.

Liverpool are also leading the Premier League title race, and are through to the Europa League Round of 16.

Regardless of what plays out there though, Martin is clearly impressed by what Klopp has already done in England.

Speaking about his opposite number for Wednesday night, the Southampton boss was quoted by Daily Echo journalist Alfie House as saying: “I am going to stand in the dugout against one of the greatest managers we have had in the Premier League. I look forward to that very much and we have enjoyed looking at the games as we do in any game.”

Liverpool game an intriguing situation for Southampton

It will be intriguing to see just how Southampton approach this clash with Liverpool on Wednesday night.

The Saints of course, go into this in some poor form. The 2-1 defeat to Millwall on Saturday was their third loss in four games.

As a result, they may prefer to focus on the promotion race, which they are of course, still not out of.

Indeed, this may not be the most welcome of distractions, particularly if they pick up any more costly injuries.

Of course, there is a chance that a win here, could snap them out of that rut they have got themselves in when it comes to the league.

However, a Liverpool team on the sort of high that this one are, will be incredibly difficult for Southampton to overcome.

That in turn, could make this a long night for the Saints. Combined with the fact that winning promotion back to the Premier League has to be the priority, it will be interesting to see just how Southampton approach this match.
