Russell Martin looks set to receive a solution to his goalkeeper problem at Southampton as a deal for Aaron Ramsdale edges closer.
With Gavin Bazunu ruled out until at least early next year with an Achilles injury sustained in April, Russell Martin has had to rely on Alex McCarthy so far this season.
A goalkeeper from the generation before there was such an emphasis on footwork, McCarthy has struggled to adapt to Southampton’s possession-based style and needed upgrading.
That saw Southampton explore a number of options, with Feyenoord goalkeeper Justin Bijlow on the brink of signing earlier this week before a failed medical scuppered that plan.
That could have been a blessing in disguise for the Saints as they now look set to wrap up a permanent deal for Arsenal back-up Aaron Ramsdale in a move that gives the club’s survival chances a real boost.

Aaron Ramsdale set to sign five-year contract at Southampton
News of a breakthrough in the efforts to sign Ramsdale began to filter through ahead of kick-off of Southampton’s 5-3 Carabao Cup win over Cardiff City on Wednesday night.

Martin refused to give too much away post-match but did comment that Ramsdale would be a “fantastic” addition should he sign.
Now, The Athletic journalist David Ornstein has provided the news that all Southampton fans have been waiting for as he confirmed the England goalkeeper is undergoing a medical ahead of signing a permanent deal for four years with an option of a fifth.
Ornstein revealed the details of the transfer, as he posted on X: “Aaron Ramsdale undergoing medical at Southampton before completing permanent switch from Arsenal.
“26-year-old goalkeeper joining Southampton on proposed 4+1 year contract. £18 million up front, £1 million on Premier League survival, £6 million of further incentives; maximum £25 million to Arsenal.
Ramsdale deal brilliant business from Southampton

Southampton owners Sport Republic may not have anticipated paying up to £25 million for a goalkeeper this summer.
However, with time running out in the transfer window and the need for a new number one becoming urgent, the deal for Ramsdale is one that they simply had to get over the line.
An initial £18 million fee for an England international who Arsenal themselves paid £30 million for three summers ago can be viewed as really good business for a goalkeeper who immediately elevates the side.
The former Bournemouth man’s arrival will give the players and supporters a huge boost as the biggest concern of the summer has now been addressed.
Martin will still want one or two more additions prior to Friday’s 11pm transfer deadline, but this one was undoubtedly the most important.
