‘Dangerous’… Sky Sports pundit issues Bristol City vs Southampton prediction

Southampton travel to Ashton Gate on Tuesday night, to face Bristol City in the Championship.

Following their thrilling 5-3 win over Huddersfield Town at the weekend, the Saints will be looking to extend their unbeaten run to 26 games.

Victory over the Robins would also keep Russell Martin‘s side second in the Championship table.

The hosts will be able to take some confidence and momentum into this game. That comes after a 2-1 win away at Middlesbrough on Saturday afternoon.

Despite that, one former Southampton midfielder believes his old club will still have too much for their opponents in midweek.

Southampton backed for another win at Bristol City

Writing in his regular predictions column for Sky Sports, David Prutton has backed the Saints to claim all three points here.

The pundit admits that Bristol City should have confidence from that win at Middlesbrough. Victory at the Riverside Stadium on Saturday ended a run of six games without a win in the league for the Robins.

Despite that Prutton – who made 82 league appearances for Southampton between 2003 and 2007, scoring three goals – believes Martin’s team will still have too much for their hosts.

Outlings his expectations for the game, Prutton said:

“Bristol City also turned up and got a brilliant win at Middlesbrough on Saturday to end what was a pretty poor run of form for them. It will give them confidence heading into this one.

“But Southampton look so dangerous right now. Even after that early stumble against Huddersfield they came back to take all three points and keep Leeds a little at bay behind them. They should have too much power for the Robins. Away win.”

The pundit has therefore predicted a 2-1 win for Southampton from this game.

Saints should be aiming for a win at Ashton Gate

It does feel as though anything less than three points from this game, will be disappointing for those of a Southampton persuasion.

Of course, Bristol City are not a team who are currently struggling in the Championship. Indeed, their victory over West Ham in the FA Cup recently, showed how good they can be.

However, Southampton have swept aside many teams playing at a similar level to what the Robins are at in the Championship, on this current run.

As a result, they will expect to produce a similar result here, especially after the stunning second half they produced against Huddersfield Town on Saturday afternoon.

Meanwhile, Leeds United are just a point behind Southampton in the race for the second automatic promotion place.

That means the Saints can ill afford to drop points from this one, with Daniel Farke’s side making the trip to Swansea City on Tuesday. The Yorkshire club will be favourites to win in that match.

With that in mind, it seems Southampton will also have to win against Bristol City to maintain their own strong position in the automatic promotion race. On current form, you would certainly expect them to do just that.
