Southampton midfielder Flynn Downes has slammed the fans for booing following their draw to Rotherham United.

The Saints took a quick lead through Stuart Armstrong and continued to dominate the following 88 minutes.

With 22 shots, 3.23 xG and five big chances, Russell Martin’s side were left wondering how they didn’t smash their opponents.

Jordan Hugill scored a world-class equaliser with 15 minutes remaining, which saw the sides share the point.

Following the final whistle, the Saints’ fans voiced their opinions.

What has Flynn Downes said?

Despite the frustrating result, the performance was as good as it could have been other than the missing goals.

With that being said there were some boo’s around St Mary’s at full time.

Downes wasn’t happy with the reaction at full-time: “After a performance like that, I know we should have won but we shouldn’t be getting booed off after a game again.

“That to me is mental.”

With 80% possession and 18 shots more than their opponents, the reaction was uncalled for.

Downes continued on to say: “I get everyone wants to win, and we’re the same. But the performance and the way we played – it was weird.

“We need the boost from the fans, so to get booed at the end is mental, absolutely mental.”

Maybe a reactionary comment in the heat of the moment but with that being said, boos were not necessary given the performance.
