Southampton manager Russell Martin has said that set piece coach Andreas Georgson has been crucial in helping Saints through their bad run of form.

Before being unbeaten in their last three games before the international break, Saints had lost four in a row.

Georgson joined Saints as a set piece coach after working with Mikel Arteta at Arsenal, in which he had also gone through a bad run of form before turning it around.

Now back in good form, Martin has reflected on the bad run and said how helpful Georgson has been.

“It’s been great to have him in,” Martin told the Daily Echo. “He’s been really important during this period because he was there at Arsenal under Mikel Arteta when they had a really tough run.

“There was a lot of noise around the club at that time. Now, the same people who love Arteta as a manager are the same ones that wanted him out.

“It’s really interesting that he lived and worked through that – he can offer a lot of advice and composure around that. He’s been a really good addition.”

Martin continued to praise Georgson, who appears to do more than just work on set pieces,

“He’s been great, I really like Andreas,” Martin added. “He’s got a lot of experience and some really great ideas around set pieces.

“I know we have conceded some set pieces, but we have looked really solid and a real threat from them.

“He will continue to work with the players to add that, along with the other stuff. There is a lot for the players to take in.

“It’s been a really important part of the process and we all know how important set pieces are in this division.

“There is a big focus on them. The lads have really bought into it and into working with Andreas because he is such a good guy.

“The way he delivers (information) to them is really good. He’s a really important member of our team now alongside Carl Martin, Gilly (Matt Gill), Ben (Parker), Rhys (Owen), Dean Thornton – all those guys.

“He’s not just involved with set pieces. He will give his opinion on certain things. As a coaching staff, we will sit, discuss and argue.”
