Mason Holgate made his debut for Southampton against Sunderland, as his new side lost 5-0 at the Stadium Of Light.

Russell Martin has accepted that it was his error to start Holgate so soon after signing from Everton.

It was the worst possible start for the Saints as Jack Clarke scored less than a minute into proceedings.

It was two, just six minutes later, Pierre Ekwah getting his first of the afternoon. He claimed his second on half time, taking aim from range.

Bradley Dack made it four, within three minutes of the restart.

16-year old Chris Rigg scored his first ever professional goal, a misery complier for Martin’s side.

Holgate started the game, but was replaced at 64 minutes. Starting his first game just days after signing.

What has Russell Martin said about Mason Holgate?

The Everton loanee has been subject to some negative fan attention following the poor result, but his manager came to his defence.

Discussing the new man post match, he said: “It’s my fault for playing Mason so early, he’s only been here for a week.”

It appeared that his career experience was a reason for his inclusion: “I actually thought he would handle the atmosphere a lot better than some of the other options we had there.”

The performance wasn’t very encouraging to say the least, resulting in some uncomplimentary social media posts.

This was a factor Martin hoped wouldn’t affect his team: “I hope the social media stuff doesn’t influence the players. It really fluctuates from game to game.

“Mason has got a great mentality and it’s our job as a coaching staff to make sure he improves.”

Looking forward to the international break, it gives the Saints chance to rest and reset after a string of unfavourable results this season.
