ITV pundit warns Southampton about one club in race for Championship promotion

Southampton remain locked in the battle for automatic promotion from the Championship to the Premier League.

The Saints were dealt a blow in their hopes of claiming a top two finish in the division on Tuesday night.

That came with a 3-1 defeat to Bristol City at Ashton Gate that ended a 25-game unbeaten run for Russell Martin‘s side.

With Leeds United beating Swansea City 4-0 that same evening, Southampton have now dropped to third in the current standings.

Now it seems as though there are some concerns about the form of the Elland Road club, from at least one high profile Southampton fan.

Leeds United warning sent to Southampton

Following their victory over Swansea City on Tuesday night, Leeds United have now won their last seven consecutive league games.

As a result, Daniel Farke’s side are showing the sort of form that could get them over the line in the battle for automatic promotion potentially at the expense of Southampton.

Interestingly, the two clubs are set to face each other at Elland Road on the final day of the regular season.

Now it seems as though that is something that has caused some concern for ITV pundit Ed Chamberlin, even if he is confident about the club’s overall position.

Speaking on the Saints and Sinners podcast, the presenter and Southampton fan was asked if he was confident of the club winning promotion this season.

Responding to that, Chamberlin said:

“I’m very nervous about it. I’m full of hope I’ve got great faith. We’re a very well run club and I think Jason Wilcox does a brilliant job – he’s a bit of an unsung hero.

“We’re in good hands moving forward whatever happens, but I’m a bit nervous about it because I think Leeds are just hitting form at the wrong time for us.”

Saints must bounce back quickly after midweek setback

It does feel crucial that Southampton respond quickly when they go to The Hawthorns to face West Brom on Friday night.

The Baggies themselves are in impressive form and chasing a promotion place so should be a threat for the Saints.

Even so, they must still remain confident as they aim for an immediate promotion back to the Premier League.

Leeds United are undeniably moving into a strong position in the race for a top two spot. However, Southampton are just two points behind the Yorkshire club, with a game in hand.

That of course, means things are still in the hands of Martin’s side when it comes to the race for automatic promotion.

As a result, they cannot afford to let their confidence drop too much, when they still have such a big opportunity, which they must not risk passingup in any way.

With that in mind, this clash with West Brom may be about more than just three points for Southampton given the opening it could offer Leeds United as well, if they do not take a win in that match.
