Today Russell Martin has confirmed that Saints’ captain, James Ward-Prowse, has edged closer to a move to West Ham United.

A rumour that has surrounded Southampton all summer long appears to have reached its end.

West Ham had held an interest in Ward-Prowse for many months, but as time went on and the season began, it felt the skipper may be saying.

Despite this, the Saints’ boss has confirmed the 28-year-old is set to depart St Mary’s after 20 years.

What has Russell Martin said?

It has been a difficult decision for all parties to be a part of which was conveyed by the manager: “he’s really emotional about leaving this club which shows you how much he cares and how difficult it will be for him if it all goes through.

“I think he would’ve really liked it to have ended in a different way if it was ever going to happen. he’s been torn with wanting to be here and help get the club back to the Premier League.”

As one of the Saints’ most consistent players over the last five years at least, he will be a big loss no doubt.

In Will Smallbone, Carlos Alcaraz, Joe Aribo and new signing Shea Charles, the club has strength in depth to fill that void.

Who will take captaincy from James Ward-Prowse?

Martin confirmed that in the likely event that Ward-Prowse leaves, Jack Stephens will become the Saints’ club captain.

This decision had gone down well with the players: “I told the guys Jack will be the club captain now. They applauded him, they’re happy for him.”

Stephens has been at the club since 2011, making over 120 appearances and signed a contract extension at the start of the season.

The manager was clearly happy with the centre back becoming captain describing him as a ‘real leader’.

“he has the two most important things you could ever have as a leader, that’s authenticity – he’s really himself in all situations – and he has courage, he’s really brave.”

It isn’t an ideal situation to lose your most influential player and captain in one foul swoop.

It is a new era at St Mary’s and with Martin in the hot seat and Stephens with the armband, where could the Saints go?
