Russell Martin has praised loanee Flynn Downes for his brilliant display against Birmingham City this afternoon.

The 24-year-old midfielder dominated the play in the middle of the park for Martin’s side – with Downes utilised to win possession back for Southampton.

Downes, who is on loan from West Ham United, made four tackles and won five ground duels – playing a key role in regaining possession for Martin’s side.

However, he was just as impressive in possession, making 126 passes in 90 minutes, the most of any player on the pitch.

Russell Martin on Flynn Downes’ performances

Speaking to the media after the game, Martin was full of compliments for the 24-year-old loanee.

“Flynn has been monstrous. Physically he is a beast and he has so much composure on the ball.

“His teammates really appreciate the role that he has because it’s so tough being that guy.”

Downes starting to show his class

Although he endured a tough start to life at St Mary’s, Downes has really started to demonstrate the qualities he possesses at Championship level.

He’s no stranger to the division having enjoyed spells with the likes of Ipswich Town and Swansea City, but he’s taken his game to a different level at the Saints.

He may only be on loan at the club, but he’s starting to become a real spearhead in the dressing room and showing great leadership skills – setting a great example to the youngsters in the squad.

Today may have been his best game in a Southampton shirt, with Martin clearly happy with the progress the 24-year-old is making.
