Ipswich Town attacker Wes Burns believes that Southampton were easy to play against in their 1-0 win at St Mary’s.

The Saints fell to their third straight defeat this week against the Tractor Boys with fans unhappy with recent results.

On the night, the away side had less possession, expected goals and shots but still had more big chances during the game.

Omari Hutchinson scored his first-ever professional goal and that was enough to secure all three points.

What has Wes Burns said?

Despite having less possession, the away side didn’t suffer from a lack of chances.

When asked about the Saints’ possession, Burns said: “There’s a misconception where, when a team has a lot of possession, it feels like we’re under the cosh.

“It’s very different when you’re out there. We have such a strong, disciplined shape.”

The Welshman believed that the home side were too predictable when it came to passing patterns and playing out from the back.

On their passing, he said: “It was easy to read where their passes were going, and you saw a lot of the time that they were kicking balls away, off the field or straight to us.

“This was because we’re shutting angles that we know they want to play.”

The away side had done their research and it worked a treat.

Discussing the Saints, Burns said: “They’re a very possession-based team, you’ve got full-backs rolling into midfield. We knew that blocking the middle and not letting any passes through would be key tonight.”

Another tough night for the Saints but they will be back quickly against Middlesbrough to bounce back.
