Southampton manager has praised his side’s performance as they narrowly beat out Stoke City away from home, 1-0.

For just the second time this season, the Saints have secured back-to-back wins with the last time being in August.

Martin’s side secured a very impressive victory over Leeds United at the weekend and followed this up with a win over the Potters.

Southampton had the majority of the ball and created the better of the chances on the whole.

Stuart Armstrong’s goal just before half-time was enough to secure all three points.

What has Russell Martin said?

After some poor form, Martin appears to have cracked the code in securing some wins.

Discussing his side’s performance, he said: “I thought we were great, really good to follow up on the effort we put in on Saturday against another really good team.

“I’m really proud of the boys and really grateful to them. We built up so well in the first half but it kept breaking down in the final third.”

One man who stood out on the night was Flynn Downes as he completed 100% of tackles and 63% of duels.

On the West Ham United loanee, Martin said: “Flynn was monstrous today and it has been the Flynn we know in the last two games. He’s been outstanding.”

The performance as a team was paramount for the Saints’ boss: Everyone was really fighting for each other and really aggressive.

“While we also took the fight out of the game we needed to with incredible moments of calmness.”

The defensive side of the game also pleased the manager: “I think when the team has had some more positive results and is flowing a bit more we kill the game off.

“We limited Stoke to very little which was good.”

A positive performance and hopefully some form which can be carried forward.
