Russell Martin told Southampton play so much better when ‘brave’ player is starting

Southampton have automatic promotion in their sights but can’t afford any more slips up with 10 games of the season remaining.

Russell Martin‘s side have put together successive victories following a dismal run of form that saw them suffer three defeats in four, leaving their top two hopes in major jeopardy.

Whilst they remain six points adrift of Leeds United in second, they do have a game in hand on their promotion rivals and have gathered some momentum.

Their productive form has coincided with Jack Stephens‘ return to the side, with the former England under-21 international adding a much-needed steeliness to the defence.

Southampton saw their incredible 25-game unbeaten run come to an end last month at the hands of Bristol City at Ashton Gate. Interestingly, Stephens didn’t feature in that game as Martin’s men shipped three goals.

Speaking on the Total Saints Podcast, Daily Echo journalist Alfie House made reference to Stephens’ importance: “The games they lost against Bristol City and Hull City when I think they were the only games in that three-game period where Russell Martin feels they were outmanned and beaten by braver men, he didn’t play a minute.

“The game against Millwall they absolutely dominated and they should have got a result, he did play.”

As the gruelling 46-game campaign draws to a close, with Southampton very much in need of a winning run, perhaps Stephens is almost undroppable.

Russell Martin a huge fan of Jack Stephens

Martin is known to be a huge admirer of Stephens and has hailed the defender in the past for his bravery and quality.

Speaking back in August, the former Swansea City boss said: “Ultimately, he (Stephens) is brave. He is brave as a defender but also so brave on the ball and he showed his quality so I am really pleased. If Prowsey is not playing, Jack will be captain.”

Often at times this season, the 30-year-old has been reduced to a role from the bench, having only made 10 starts.

So with Southampton part of the chasing pack, and pressure beginning to mount, Stephens has to be in serious contention to start much of the remaining fixtures.

Martin needs leaders on the pitch to help some of the younger players across the line and the academy graduate is one of the most experienced members at the club, having racked up over 300 appearances in professional football.
