Former Southampton centre-back and legend Maya Yoshida is currently training with the club.

Currently contracted to MLS side LA Galaxy, he is currently on a post-season break following the end of the season over in the USA.

The club posted footage on their X account (formerly known as Twitter) of the former Japanese international training with Russell Martin’s side at Staplewood, Saints’ training ground.

The video has got plenty of Saints fans excited.

One fan replied saying: “Go on, lob him a short loan deal.”

Another said: “Legend!”

Another fan said: “Good to see him in training, even if not long term.”

Whilst it is unlikely to see Yoshida back in a Southampton shirt anytime soon, it is nice to see him back training at the club.

Clearly as shown by the reaction to the video, no love has been lost between Yoshida and Saints fans since his departure back in 2020.

The 35-year-old made the live to Southampton in 2012 from Dutch side VVV-Venlo.

He would then go on to make 194 appearances for Saints, scoring nine goals.

He then spent the second half of the 19/20 season on loan at Italian side Sampdoria, before joining them permanently in the summer of the year following the expiry of his contract at Saints.

He would spend two years in Italy before moving to Germany, where he would join giants Schalke in their first season back in the Bundesliga after a year away.

Ultimately, he could not help steer Schalke away from an immediate relegation back to the second tier, and then left at the end of the season before making the move to America to sign for LA Galaxy in August.
