Southampton are enjoying an excellent season in the Championship right now.

The Saints are currently 3rd in the table, two points adrift of 2nd place Leeds United and with a game in hand.

As a result, they are in a strong position to secure an immediate promotion back to the Premier League.

They have also recently set a club record run of 25 games unbeaten. That sort of form is could well attract the attention of other clubs when it comes to certain individuals.

Now it seems as though that does not just apply to those doing the business out on the pitch for Southampton.

Man Utd plotting behind the scenes raid of Southampton

According to a new report from The Athletic, Manchester United are keen to recruit Jason Wilcox from Southampton.

Wilcox is currently Director of Football at St Mary’s. That is a role he has held for just over a year, having been appointed in January 2023.

Prior to that, he had spent nine years at Manchester City, leaving a role as their academy director to join Southampton.

It is thought that Manchester United are yet to make an official approach to the Saints over a deal. However, Wilcox is apparently aware of the Old Trafford club’s interest in him.

If appointed, it is expected that Wilcox would take on a job reporting to the Sporting Director at Manchester United.

It is said that Dan Ashworth, currently at Newcastle United, is the top target to take over that position with the Red Devils.

Jason Wilcox interest will be a concern for Saints

This interest in Wilcox will no doubt be worrying for those of a Southampton persuasion.

The 52-year-old did an impressive job during his time with Manchester City, that did enhance his reputation.

He also appears to have won plenty of credit since taking on his new position with Southampton, laying some promising foundations at St Mary’s.

However, this interest from Manchester United may well attract his attention. The Red Devils are of course, still one of the biggest clubs in the world from a business perspective. They are also looking to get back to that level from a footballing point of view as well.

The chance to be part of that is something Wilcox may find hard to turn down, should the opportunity arise.

With that in mind, this is something that will no doubt be causing more than a few nerves around Southampton right now.
