Southampton lose in-form loanee to hamstring injury

Southampton already are depleted when it comes to defenders available, with only Jan Bednarek, Taylor Harwood-bellis and Mason Holgate available at centre-back.

Juan Larios was handed an extended time in the sidelines after being on the verge of a return from a long-term injury, whilst centre back Jack Stephens has been out of action since mid-august and is still yet to return.

But unfortunately for Saints manager Russell Martin, he may start to be short of options.

According to TalkSport, Manchester City loanee Harwood-Bellis has picked up a hamstring injury whilst away on international duty.

The 21-year-old is currently away with England’s under-21s, whom he won the U21 Euros with in the summer, but is now set to miss their Euro U21 qualification fixtures against Serbia and Ukraine.

It is also said that manager Lee Carsley will not be calling up anyone to replace Harwood-Bellis in the England squad.

Losing Taylor Harwood-Bellis would be a big blow for Russell Martin

This will be a big blow for Saints and Martin.

As aforementioned, Martin is left with less options at centre-back with this setback.

Harwood-Bellis has made six appearances so far this season for Saints, and after a shaky start has now formed a decent partnership with Jan Bednarek, with the pair only conceding two goals in their last three.

Martin will now be looking to the likes of summer signing Shea Charles or Everton loanee Mason Holgate to replace him in the starting lineup.

Harwood-Bellis is on loan at St Mary’s for the season, with the club reportedly having a clause to buy him permanently for £20 million, should Saints gain promotion to the Premier League.
