Theo Walcott has praised the ‘good ideas’ of Russell Martin and expects a run to the playoffs for his former side.
Southampton are currently sitting in tenth place at the second international break of the season.
The Saints beat Leeds United and Stoke City in October to bounce back from four straight defeats, but a draw to Rotherham has slowed down their momentum.
Now Theo Walcott has gave his verdict on Southampton’s season prospects which he thinks will be a playoff finish.
The 34-year-old hung up his boots over the summer and has been working as a pundit since then. But despite not being at the club anymore, he has been keeping a keen eye on what’s happening at St Marys’.
Speaking to the Daily Echo, Walcott praised Russell Martin but also suggested he is keen to attend a Southampton game this season.

Walcott on Southampton’s season prospects
“I’d like to come down to a few [games] if I can,” he said. “Looking at the weekend – Rotherham are right down there, but that doesn’t matter in the Championship.
“You always expect the teams that go down to come back up, but it’s not straightforward. Anyone can beat anyone. Saints have a young team and a young manager who has good ideas. From what I know the players are really keen on him and are really happy. That’s what you want as a team and as players.
“As soon as you turn it can be sour, but I’m not getting any signs of that. They will be fine. I just think it’s been a lot harder than they expected. When you come to the stadium, you think this is a Premier League club.
“That’s what I see here. I think they will get back in time, but it’s not going to happen overnight. I believe they will be in the playoffs. But it’s just the luck of the draw and we will have to see.”
Southampton will be hoping to push on with their unbeaten streak following this international break.
