The former Southampton player has spoken fondly about the Saints in a recent interview.

Southampton’s start to the season has been one that has left Russell Martin’s side without a win.

The Saints currently sit in 19th in the Premier League table going into the first international break, with goal difference separating them and Everton at the foot of the table.

They had an opportunity to kick-off their season in brilliant fashion at St James’ Park as Newcastle United went down to 10-men courtesy of a red card for Fabian Schar following an off-the-ball collision with Ben Brereton Diaz on his Saints debut.

Southampton were unable to get anything from the game, with Joelinton capitalising off of Alex McCarthy’s mistake in-between the sticks to score the only goal of the game.

For Newcastle United, former Saint Tino Livramento expectedly played a brilliant game at full-back.

The 21-year-old has managed to become an established Premier League talent, and he has no doubts that Southampton played a significant part in his development.

Tino Livramento recalls Southampton career and the ‘tough times’

The former Southampton full-back signed from Chelsea in 2021 in a £22million deal, and he was quite the hit for the Saints until injuries plagued his season.

Speaking to TalkSport on Youtube, Livramento recalls his time at the club, where he said: “I had the opportunity to go to Southampton, and then it was just a complete change in that way, but it was something that I really enjoyed, you know, kind of being like sort of a underdog in most of the games you go into, but I loved every minute of being on the pitch when I was a Southampton player.

“The fans, the manager, the team, they all took to me and obviously they were there for me in my tough times again when I was injured.”

Livramento unfortunately suffered a cruciate ligament tear in the back end of the 2021/22 season, which saw him out of action for over a year until he returned to play just two substitute appearances at the end of the 2022/23 campaign.

Southampton’s 2022/23 season could have been widely different with Tino Livramento

It was a disaster for Southampton in the 2022/23 season that Livramento was set to miss nearly all of the action, especially after such a brilliant first season at the club following his move from Chelsea.

Southampton did have the option of Kyle Walker-Peters at full-back, which certainly wasn’t a bad option at Premier League level, however there could easily be so much speculation on where the Saints would have finished if they had their first choice right-back, and one that had such an impact during his opening campaign.

The move to bring Livramento in from Chelsea was far from a waste from a financial point of view, as Southampton were still able to make profit from the defender after his 2023 move to Newcastle United, however it easily could have panned out much differently with the youngster.
