Adam Armstrong has so far been an unsuccessful acquisition for Southampton, scoring just five goals in 67 appearances for the Saints, but he could finally find his form back in the Championship.
The striker joined from Blackburn Rovers for around £15m, after a few clinical campaigns at Ewood Park, but failed to continue his lethal form in front of goal after his move down south.
Southampton’s relegation last season means that a lot of players will depart this summer as Russell Martin aims to reset the squad, but Armstrong might find himself in strong contention for a first-team spot, and a return to the Championship might be the best thing for him.
Martin has hinted that there may be space for Armstrong to play across the attacking line, and described the 26-year-old as “outstanding.”
Armstrong scored 28 goals in his last season in the second division, and dropping down to that level could help him revive his career, which is currently at a crossroads.
Should Southampton keep Armstrong?

Armstrong has two years left on his contract, but his poor form has meant his value may never be lower than it currently is, and Martin has nothing to lose by trying to play him back into form.
If he can find his goalscoring touch, not only could he present himself as an internal solution upfront as Southampton chase promotion, but he could increase his own value for a transfer next summer if the Saints return to the top flight.
The Englishman has 56 Championship goals to his name, and ample experience in multiple positions across the front line. Playing against more familiar opposition, whilst still lining up alongside quality players such as Carlos Alcaraz, he could make himself a hero if he can help the Saints recover from their slump under Martin.
