Gavin Bazunu has been defended by his manager, Russell Martin, following question about signing a new goalkeeper.

Southampton hosted a fan forum this week, allowing supporters to ask their manager some questions.

When asked if the club would look to sign a new goalkeeper, Martin came out in defence of Bazunu.

The new manager has reinstated the Irishman as number one. This despite Alex McCarthy taking his place in the back end of last season.

Bazunu has started both league games this season.

He came under some scrutiny as he conceded four against Norwich City, but his manager still has faith.

What has Russell Martin said about Gavin Bazunu?

When asked the question about another goalkeeper coming in, Martin couldn’t be more sure of himself: “We don’t have a problem with the goalkeeper in my opinion.”

Showing what any good manager would do and defending his players to the end.

He was full of praise for the goalkeeper who is getting better every game: “He have a full international who is 20-years-old.

“He will take unbelievable learning from last season playing in the team that finished bottom of the Premier League.”

It was clear that Martin wanted the feeling around the Irishman to change and wanted fans to show faith: “I’ve been made aware of this narrative around Gav. Last season has happened, you can’t impact that.

“He’ll be one of the best goalkeepers in the division for how we want to play. If I was going to look at a goalkeeper I’d want to go and sign Gavin Bazunu.”

This public backing has been described by Goalkeepers Anonymous on Twitter as ‘incredible’.

The Saints manager ended his praise saying: “From my short time here, Gavin is going to be a brilliant goalkeeper.”

This may see the narrative tilt favourably for the young goalkeeper and fans will hope he can kick on now.

With McCarthy and Joe Lumley there is plenty of competition for the role, but Martin has set out his stool early.
