Southampton must swoop for ‘quality’ Championship star if Jack Clarke move fails

Southampton still have plenty to think when it comes to the Championship promotion race.

As things stand, Russell Martin‘s side are now 4th in the standings, after a 2-1 defeat at home to Hull City on Tuesday night.

Even so, it appears there are already plans being made for the summer transfer window at St Mary’s.

According to reports from journalist Alan Nixon, Southampton are planning a summer move to sign Sunderland winger Jack Clarke.

The 23-year-old has once again been in excellent form this season, proving a driving force behind the Black Cats’ push for a play-off place.

As a result, it would be something of a coup for the Saints to secure his services. However, there is a good chance Southampton will not have it all their own way in their pursuit of Clarke.

Premier League clubs keen on Jack Clarke

Perhaps not surprisingly given his form this season, the Saints are far from the only club to have ben linked with Clarke.

According to reports from The Northern Echo, at least six Premier League teams are interested in the Sunderland winger.

That of course, could make it difficult for Southampton to complete a deal to sign Clarke in the summer.

If they do miss out on the signing of the Black Cats man, they will surely have to look at other options to fill that role in Russell Martin’s side.

With that in mind, one other player currently competing in the Championship who could be worth considering for Southampton, is Liam Millar.

Southampton could benefit from Liam Millar

If they are unable to complete a deal for Clarke, then Millar could be an alternative for the Saints to target in the summer.

The 24-year-old is currently on loan in the Championship with Preston North End. He joined the Lancashire club from Swiss side Basel, back in the summer.

Since then he has impressed, scoring four goals – including some stunning strikes – and providing five assists in 27 league games.

Indeed, his current manager Ryan Lowe recently referred to the Canada international as quality. Operating in a left wing role just like Clarke, Millar has also caused problems for Southampton when up against them this season.

As a result, those at St Mary’s ought to be confident that he could make a positive impact in Martin’s side.

Beyond that, Millar is set to enter the final year of his contract with parent club Basel in the summer. That could make him more affordable than Clarke, since Basel may be willing to cash in on for a reduced fee, rather than risk losing him for nothing down the line.

With Millar having seemingly enjoyed his time back in England so far, he too could be open to this move. Especially to a club such as Southampton, who could give him a chance to play in the Premier League.

Taking all that into account, Millar is one player who could be worth monitoring for Southampton, as they look to keep their options open, should they prove unsuccessful in their pursuit of Clarke.
