The plight of one former Southampton wonderkid should tell Tyler Dibling everything he needs to know

Tyler Dibling is the name on everyone’s lips after scoring his first senior goal for Southampton against Ipswich Town on Saturday.

Russell Martin has a really exciting talent to manage in Tyler Dibling, with the 18-year-old quickly taking the Premier League by storm this season.

Southampton‘s youth academy has a history of producing real gems, with the likes of Alan Shearer, Matt Le Tissier and Gareth Bale just some of those who started their careers at the club.

Dibling looks a prodigious talent and Martin was left with little choice to throw him into the Southampton starting XI after a string of impressive cameos off the bench in the early weeks of the new season.

Southampton face battle to keep Tyler Dibling amid Man Utd and Liverpool interest

Given the ease with which he has adapted to senior football at the top level it is no surprise that the country’s biggest clubs are already sniffing around Dibling.

Southampton are looking to dissuade those interested by agreeing an improved contract with the teenager but even then there is no guarantee that they will keep Dibling given the riches within the Premier League.

Manchester United, Liverpool and Newcastle United are just three of the interested clubs, but Southampton will hope the chance to play regular Premier League football under a manager who loves him in Martin will convince Dibling not to seek a move away.

Dibling is not the only Southampton youth product Southampton fans are excited about currently, as fellow 18-year-old Sam Amo-Ameyaw also looks a real talent.

However, both players can look to one of their former teammates to see that the grass is not always greener and Southampton may well be the best place for their development.

That player is Kamari Doyle who left Southampton for Brighton in January and claimed the move was to have a greater chance of playing first-team football.

Given Southampton were a Championship club at the time and Brighton were in the Premier League, the fact Doyle made this claim is a strange one as his chances of playing senior football arguably decreased with the transfer.

The same age Dibling and Amo-Ameyaw are now at the time of the move, Doyle had made two first-team appearances for Southampton and had spent most of the first half of the 2022/23 season injured so Martin had not had the chance to give him opportunities.

If Doyle was expecting to play Premier League football at Brighton then he has been left sorely disappointed so far as the midfielder is yet to make a single appearance for the Seagulls in any competition.

In fact, he is so far out of the first-team picture that he was allowed to join League One Exeter City on loan this summer.

He has scored two goals in five league games for his loan club in a decent start but it is far from the nationwide attention that Dibling is attracting for his performances in the Premier League.

If Dibling is considering pushing for a move away from Southampton for whatever reason then the club may do well to remind him of the outcome of Doyle’s transfer.
