A player Southampton sold last summer is set to again be sold after just one season at his new club.

With Southampton relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2022/23 season a fire sale took place at St Mary’s.

A total of 18 senior players left the club, either permanently, on loan, or following the expiration of their contracts in what was a summer of change at Southampton.

A number of the sales were required to ensure the financial future of the club.

There was also a lot of deadwood at the club, as well as players who felt they were too good for the Championship despite being part of the team that finished bottom of the league above.

Now, one player who the club managed to move on last summer looks set to have to find another new club this off-season.

Moussa Djenepo could be sold a year after leaving Southampton

Southampton sold Mali winger Moussa Djenepo last summer after he failed to ever live up to his early promise following his £15 million arrival in 2019.

Djenepo secured a return to Standard Liege following Russell Martin‘s arrival as manager, with a reported fee of just £3 million enough for the Belgian side to welcome the 26-year-old back for a fraction of what they sold him for four years earlier.

Now, just one year after the Standard Liege re-signed Djenepo, they appear to have found a buyer as he has again failed to find form.

That is according to journalist Kevin Sauvage, who posted on ‘X’: ‘While Konyaspor and Standard Liege have indeed found an agreement, Moussa Djenepo has not yet found one with the Turkish club.

Discussions continue while other clubs are interested in him’.

Djenepo may need another move to revive career

When Djenepo arrived at Southampton as a 21-year-old he looked a really exciting talent but he was incredibly raw.

Brilliant solo goals against both Brighton and Sheffield United in his first season at the club showed his quick feet and dribbling ability, but those two goals would only be added to three times across his four years in England.

Djenepo never developed from the raw talent and, if anything, regressed and became less consistent as time went on.

A return to Standard Liege – where he showed the form that convinced the Saints to sign him in 2019 – seemed a good one to kickstart his career.

However, it has not worked out for the 33-cap Mali international as he has managed just one goal and no assists in 30 games in all competitions since his return to Belgium.

Perhaps Djenepo is now best served moving to Turkey to revive a career that is at risk of fizzling out.
