Former Swansea City defender Ryan Manning was reportedly at Southampton’s Staplewood training ground today to speak about a potential move to the club.

The 27-year-old left Swansea at the end of last season after refusing to sign a new deal, and has a number of Championship clubs targeting him.

The left-back made 109 appearances for the Swans over three seasons since joining from QPR, and would be an ideal signing for a promotion-chasing side given his experience in the Championship.

A report from GIVEMESPORT has now detailed that Manning was at the training ground on Tuesday morning to speak about a potential transfer, and Russell Martin’s presence at the club could sway his decision as he decides where to go next.

It is still unclear how detailed his talks with Southampton were, but it would be a big boost if they can beat a number of division rivals to his signature.

What can Manning bring to Southampton?

The Saints are yet to make a summer signing, and have just one available senior left-back in Romain Perraud, whose position at the club is currently unclear.

Manning could arrive with over 200 Championship appearances under his belt, and at 27, he could be an option for a number of years even if Southampton achieve promotion.

Martin will know Manning well, as the former Republic Of Ireland international made 88 appearances under the new Saints manager, more than under any other coach in his career.

Although a defender by trade, Manning has a lot of ability going forward, having notched up seven goals and 19 assists for Swansea, and could inject some proven quality into an otherwise young Southampton squad.

To land such a quality and reliable player on a free transfer would be excellent business, as Martin aims to get Southampton’s transfer business moving.
