Whether Aaron Ramsdale was signed in time to make Southampton debut vs Brentford

When a new signing is made football fans want to see their new player in action as soon as possible and that is no different with Southampton having secured a Deadline Day deal for Aaron Ramsdale.

Southampton broke the bank to pay up to £25 million for Aaron Ramsdale, with the urgent need for a goalkeeper forcing Sport Republic to act.

Russell Martin will be relieved to have got a new first-choice goalkeeper in at Southampton and particularly one of the calibre of Ramsdale.

Alex McCarthy has started both of the Saints’ first two Premier League games of the season – both 1-0 defeats – but is not of the level required play Martin’s possession-heavy style.

Ramsdale is therefore a huge upgrade on the 34-year-old and Martin will want to get him into the side as soon as possible.

Southampton journalist ‘quietly confident’ Aaron Ramsdale can play vs Brentford

In order for any player signed on Deadline Day to be allowed to play in this weekend’s Premier League fixtures the deal has to have been registered prior to midday on Friday.

Ramsdale was officially announced as a Southampton player shortly after that cut off, but that is not to say the paperwork was not done in time for the England international to be involved against Brentford on Saturday.

There has still be no confirmation either way, but Daily Echo reporter Alfie House has revealed on X that he is ‘quietly confident’ that Ramsdale is available for selection.

House responded to a post that stated Sky Sports journalist Mark McAdam claimed on his Instagram Live that he thought Ramsdale was on the coach that left for Brentford, saying: “He was part of the team meetings etc so I’m quietly confident [Ramsdale was registered in time to play]”.

Southampton’s Deadline Day business does not look to be over with Ramsdale, as the club are working on deals to sign wide duo Ryan Fraser and Maxwel Cornet.

Neither deal is confirmed at this stage, meaning neither player will be available to play away at Brentford on Saturday should they sign ahead of 11pm.

That is a shame, but Martin will feel the boost of having Ramsdale in goal will be enough for him and his squad as they try and get their first points of the Premier League season.
