First-Team Squad

Southampton’s squad has been built for the 2024/25 season with 35 players under Russell Martin’s disposal at St Mary’s. The Saints have contracted to the club four goalkeepers, 12 defenders, 10 midfielders and nine forwards, including any senior players sent out on loan.

Southampton goalkeepers

Alex McCarthy

Southampton brought Alex McCarthy to the club back in 2016 from Crystal Palace to bolster their Premier League side. He has since been in and out as the Saints’ No1 over the years and earned his sole England cap against the USA in November 2018.

Joe Lumley

Joe Lumley joined Southampton in August 2023 on an initial one-year deal from Middlesbrough. He has enjoyed a well-travelled career in the EFL and only became a Premier League player for the first time in 2024/25.

Aaron Ramsdale

Arsenal agreed to sell Aaron Ramsdale to Southampton in a deadline day deal in August 2024 worth a reported £25m. The Saints only invested an initial £18m to sign the Euro 2024 finalist with England after he spent the previous season on the Gunners’ bench.

Gavin Bazunu

Southampton signed Gavin Bazunu from Premier League giants Manchester City for a reported £12m in 2022. The Republic of Ireland international has since enjoyed spells as the Saints’ No1 between the sticks when fit.

Southampton defenders

Kyle Walker-Peters

Kyle Walker-Peters cost Southampton a £12m fee when he made the move south from Tottenham Hotspur in 2020. The right-back has since made over 100 league appearances for the Saints and has also been capped by England.

Ryan Manning

Ryan Manning is a Republic of Ireland international who signed with Southampton in the summer of 2023. Manning joined the Saints from Swansea City on a free transfer and won the Championship play-offs in his first season at St Mary’s.

Jack Stephens

Jack Stephens has been contracted to Southampton for more than a decade and became their captain in 2023. The Saints handed him their armband after selling fellow academy graduate James Ward-Prowse.

Taylor Harwood-Bellis

Southampton paid Manchester City a £20m fee for the permanent transfer of Taylor Harwood-Bellis in 2024. His move was an obligatory cause as part of the defender’s loan transfer for the previous season which promotion to the Premier League activated.

Ronnie Edwards

Southampton paid Peterborough United around £3m to sign Ronnie Edwards ahead of their return to the Premier League in 2024. The defender had impressed the Saints in League One after Posh made the 2023/24 play-off final and won that season’s EFL Trophy.

James Bree

James Bree is a Southampton right-back who joined the club for a reported £750k from Luton Town at the start of 2023. The Englishman contributed 20 assists in 143 games for the Hatters and has also played for Aston Villa.

Nathan Wood

Southampton paid Swansea City around £3m to bolster their backline with the transfer of Nathan Wood in 2024. The long-time England youth international only spent two years in south Wales after leaving his boyhood club Middlesbrough but proved crucial to their defence.

Yukinari Sugawara

AZ Alkmaar sold Yukinari Sugawara to Southampton in 2024 for around £6m as the Saints moved for further defensive reinforcements ahead of returning to the Premier League. The Japan international moved to Europe from his homeland with AZ in 2019 and regularly featured in UEFA fixtures for them.

Charlie Taylor

Burnley releasing Charlie Taylor at the end of his contract handed Southampton a chance to sign an experienced left-back in 2024. The York native arrived at St Mary’s having played in more than 160 Premier League games for the Clarets.

Juan Larios

Juan Larios is a left-back who Southampton signed for a reported £6m from Manchester City – who inserted a buy-back clause in the deal – in the summer of 2022. He has also represented Spain at the youth international level and once played in Barcelona’s La Masia academy.

Jan Bednarek

Jan Bednarek has been with Southampton since 2017 and has made over 200 appearances for the club since joining from Polish outfit Lech Poznan. Bednarek also joined Aston Villa on loan during the 2022/23 campaign and cited his mental health struggles as a factor in the temporary move.

Armel Bella-Kotchap

Southampton star Armel Bella-Kotchap is a French-born German defender. The Saints spent £10m to sign him from VfL Bochum in 2022 and saw the centre-half receive his maiden senior Germany cap in September 2022.

Southampton midfielders

Flynn Downes

West Ham United agreed to sell Flynn Downes to Southampton for £18m in 2024 after he spent the previous season on loan at St Mary’s. The midfielder earned a Europa Conference League winners’ medal with the Hammers but never settled in east London.

Joe Aribo

Joe Aribo had a fantastic 2021/22 season with Rangers which earned him an initial £6m switch to Southampton. The deal that took the Nigeria international from Glasgow to the south coast could rise to £10m if certain add-ons are met.

Will Smallbone

Will Smallbone is an Irish senior international who rose through the Southampton academy ranks right into the first-team. He was diagnosed with alopecia in 2021 but isn’t letting that affect his burgeoning football career with the Saints.

Adam Lallana

Academy icon Adam Lallana returned to Southampton in the summer of 2024 after his contract with Brighton & Hove Albion expired. The midfielder had risen from the youth ranks to captain the Saints’ first-team and 265 appearances during his first spell at the club.

Mateus Fernandes

Southampton invested around £15m to sign Mateus Fernandes from Sporting CP near the end of the summer 2024 sales. It marked the midfielder’s first spell away from his native Portugal and quickly led to his Saints debut at home to Nottingham Forest.

Samuel Edozie (on loan to RSC Anderlecht)

After spending his youth career at Millwall and Manchester City, Samuel Edozie signed for Southampton in 2022. The England U20 international scored his first Saints goal at the start of the 2023/24 season against Queens Park Rangers.

Ryan Fraser

Southampton welcomed Ryan Fraser to the club permanently in 2024 after the winger agreed to terminate his contract with Newcastle United. The Scot was at St Mary’s on loan during the previous season and helped the Saints win the Championship play-offs.

Shea Charles (on loan to Sheffield Wednesday)

Shea Charles is yet another young player to sign for Southampton in recent years from Premier League giants Manchester City. The promising Northern Ireland international signed his contract at St Mary’s after the Saints agreed to pay a £10.5m fee.

Lesley Ugochukwu

Southampton signed Lesley Ugochuku on loan from Chelsea for the 2024/25 season one year after he joined the Blues from Stade Rennais in a £23.5m transfer. The midfielder featured 15 times during his debut season at Stamford Bridge but only played 567 minutes, so headed to St Mary’s to further his experience.

Samuel Amo-Ameyaw

Southampton recruited Samuel Amo-Ameyaw from the academy ranks at Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2022. He even became the Saints’ youngest-ever Premier League player when making his debut against Liverpool aged 16 years, 10 months and 10 days old in May 2023.

Southampton forwards

Adam Armstrong

Adam Armstrong joined Southampton from Blackburn Rovers in 2021 for around £15m. The striker initially struggled in front of the net on the south coast but produced a prolific season to fire the Saints to Championship play-off glory in 2023/24 with 24 goals and 13 assists in 49 games.

Ross Stewart

Ross Stewart signed for Southampton on deadline day in the summer of 2023 in a deal that could rise to £12m. Nicknamed the ‘Loch Ness Drogba’, Stewart made a name for himself at Scottish outfit Ross County and then Sunderland.

Ben Brereton Diaz

Southampton utilised their promotion back to the Premier League to sign Ben Brereton Diaz from Villarreal in a reported £7m transfer in 2024. The Chile international had enjoyed a fruitful stint on loan to Sheffield United to finish the previous season and once offered Blackburn Rovers a prolific yet versatile attacking threat in the Championship.

Cameron Archer

Cameron Archer completed the second transfer of his summer in 2024 by joining Southampton from Aston Villa for an initial £15m, plus £2m in add-ons. He had only just returned to Villa Park after the Birmingham natives triggered their buy-back clause following Sheffield United’s relegation, to which he contributed four goals in 29 Premier League games.

Kamaldeen Sulemana

Kamaldeen Sulemana is a Ghanaian midfielder who became Southampton’s record signing at a cost of £22m when joining from French side Stade Rennais at the beginning of 2023. He also scored his first goals for the Saints against Liverpool during the 2022/23 campaign.

Maxwel Cornet

West Ham United agreed to send Maxwel Cornet on loan to Southampton late in the summer of 2024 on a season-long deal. The winger spoke with Flynn Downes and boss Russell Martin before agreeing to join the Saints after two indifferent seasons in east London.

Paul Onuachu

After a prolific four years in front of the goal with Belgian outfit KRC Genk, Paul Onuachu made the leap to the Premier League with Southampton during the 2022/23 season. He joined the Saints for just over £18.5m but initial struggles saw the striker head on loan to Trabzonspor in 23/24.

Tyler Dibling

Southampton welcomed Tyler Dibling back to the south coast just two months after he left for Chelsea in 2022. The forward left the Saints’ academy after a decade with the expectation of signing a professional contract with the Blues once he turned 17. But Dibling quickly returned to Southampton after feeling lost in the crowd amid Chelsea’s push to sign an array of talented youngsters.

Dom Ballard (on loan to Blackpool)

Dom Ballard is another youngster who has been part of the Southampton ranks for more than a decade. The forward, who has represented England at the youth international level, also scored on his senior Saints debut against Cambridge United in an EFL Cup tie in August 2022.
