Adam Armstrong has worn the captain’s armband in the absence of Jack Stephens and he has revealed what it is like.
Stephens was named as captain over the summer but suffered a lengthy injury which has seen him ruled out for a lengthy period.
With him missing, there was a question as to who might become captain while he was missing.
Russell Martin answered that question, with Armstrong being selected to wear the armband for the Saints.
The forward signed for the club in 2021, for a fee in the region of £15 million and had a tough time in the Premier League.
The Championship is his domain having scored 44 goals in his last two seasons in the division.
This campaign he has started every game under Martin and has become an important cog in the St Mary’s machine.
He has seven goals and an assist, contributing to a goal every 117 minutes. He has stepped up so far and this is the reason he has been entrusted with the captaincy.
What has Adam Armstrong said?
The former Blackburn rovers striker made his feelings clear about having the armband: “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do.
“It’s an honour to have the armband.”
He doesn’t come across as the kind of player who is going to bark out instructions, as a typical captain might.
Armstrong agreed with that point: “I’m not one to scream at players in the changing room. It’s more about encouragement on the pitch and leading by example.”
Leading by example, he has, with his performances and goal-scoring exploits, he is someone to look up to.
Clearly, Martin backs his striker: “The gaffer has put his trust in me. I’d like to think I’m repaying that out on the pitch.”
A promising start to the season by Armstrong and long may his form continue.
