Russell Martin now drops Southampton squad claim ahead of double gameweek

Southampton manager Russell Martin has said that he will be making changes in his next two games as he looks to rotate his squad.

Martin was already being forced to make changes due to the one-match suspension of Ryan Manning, after he picked up a fifth yellow card on Saturday’s win at Hull City.

This means the Irishman will miss Wednesday’s trip to fellow play-off placed team Preston North End, who are sat one place above Saints in fourth place.

There might be more than one change

Martin has hinted that he may be making more than just the one change in Saints’ upcoming fixtures.

“There are guys who have been away on international duty that played minutes so we are going to have to assess everything,” he told the Daily Echo.

“We are going to need everyone, I am sure of that. There will be changes to the team on Wednesday and on Saturday.

“I hope the team is at a point now where we can take one or two out and put one or two in. I really trust all of them.

“They are all growing together. It’s gong to be an opportunity for someone and they are going to have to take it.”

Where will Martin rotate?

It comes as no surprise that Martin may now need to rotate, especially at the back.

Along with Manning’s suspension, the likes of Juan Larios and Jack Stephens are hoping to return from injury next month, so we may see some change to bring them back in,

There is also the case of Ross Stewart, who has been injured since his arrival from Sunderland in the summer with his achilles tendon.

He is yet to return to full training but is also expected to be back soon.
