Southampton full back Ryan Manning is set to miss Saints’ next match after picking up a suspension.

The Irishman picked up his fifth yellow card of the season in Saints 2-1 win away at Hull City on Saturday afternoon, meaning he is now suspended for one match.

As confirmed by journalist for the Daily Echo, Alfie House on his X page (formerly known as Twitter), Manning will now miss Saints’ next game, which is away at Preston North End on Wednesday evening.

He should be able to return for Saturday’s fixture at home to Birmingham City, however.

Losing Manning is a blow

Losing Manning is a blow for manager Russell Martin, but there are a number of options that can come in to temporarily replace him on that left hand side.

Saints’ only other recognised senior left back is Juan Larios, but he is still out on the sidelines, so it will have to be someone playing out of position, or an under-21 player being promoted up to the first team in his absence.

More than likely, we will see one of the right backs shift over to the left hand side, such as Kyle Walker-Peters or James Bree. Bree could be in line for just his second Championship appearance this season.

Could a Championship debut for a youngster be on the cards?

Another option for replacing Manning could be Jayden Meghoma, who could also be in line to make his Championship debut.

The 17-year-old is no stranger to the Saints first team, as he started earlier in the season in the EFL Cup, playing 85 minutes in Saints 3-1 defeat to the Gills.

The England under-18 international joined Saints in the summer of 2022 as a 16-year-old, joining from Tottenham for €1 million.

He then signed his first professional contract at St Mary’s back in July.

He is also versatile at the back, also being able to play centre back.
