Russell Martin has opened up about Kamaldeen Sulemana and believes he has a big role to play for Southampton.

The Ghanaian international made his first start of the season last time out against Leeds United.

Two assists in less than 60 minutes in a 3-1 win has shown Saints fans what he can bring to the side when on song.

The winger joined from Rennes last season in a deal worth over £20 million and is yet to truly hit the ground running.

Up against Leeds, he showed his quality and has got fans excited about what might follow this breakout performance.

What has Russell Martin said about Kamaldeen Sulemana?

Martin has always been open when it comes to players who aren’t playing. Looking at Charly Alcaraz who was in a similar position.

Discussing Sulemana, in training, Martin said: “He’s been really great with us since he’s come back on the training pitch.

“I think he understands what we want from him now. He has clarity on what we expect on the pitch and what we expect of it, in terms of how he is.”

Despite not moving in the summer, there were heavy rumours linking him away over the summer.

On that point, Martin said: “I am pretty sure that both of us didn’t expect him to be here. I’m really grateful that he is and we are really lucky that he is.”

His performance against Leeds has reignited some confidence in Sulemana from the fans.

This is shared by the manager: “As you saw on Saturday, he’s an incredible talent.

“I genuinely believe he can probably play wherever he wants at some point in his career if he puts everything that he has in the right place and in the right direction.”

Hopefully Sulemana can carry this form moving forward and fire the Saints towards a promotion push.
