Southampton defender claims Saints must do ‘better’ in one thing

Southampton right back Kyle Walker-Peters was one of few of last season’s Premier League starters to remain at the club and part of manager Russell Martin’s plans.

The 26-year-old has played every minute of the Championship this season, contributing with one assist going forward.

However, defensively is where improvements are needed, with only one clean sheet in those eleven games for the Saints.

Walker-Peters has said that the defence is something that needs to be addressed if Saints are going to push themselves higher up the table and into a promotion hunt.

“The group have gained some confidence from the last three games. The Rotherham result was disappointing, but we know we played well,” Walker-Peters told the Daily Echo.

“We performed and we were unfortunate to concede from the one shot that they had on target. It’s one of those – we will go into the next game with confidence.

“Keeping clean sheets is always the focus. We need to do better defensively for sure. We dominate the ball so much that teams know when they get a chance it’s going to be one of the few chances they’ll get in the game.

“In those moments we need to defend better. Getting that win at Stoke was really big. Going there everyone speaks about how tough it can be – to show how resilient we are to hold onto the 1-0 lead gave us confidence.”

The defence has to be improved

The defence is definitely somewhere Saints desperately need to improve if they are going to finish the season higher up the table.

They have joint second worst defensive record in the league – with Rotherham United, who are in the relegation zone, being the only team to have conceded more.

This could be put down to the injuries in the defence, with Juan Larios, Jack Stephens and Mason Holgate all out injured, whilst Taylor Harwood-Bellis is also reportedly injured.

Russell Martin has said recently that he is frustrated by Saints recent form, winning two of their last seven going into the international break.
