Southampton were victorious once again on Saturday afternoon with a 3-1 victory over Wayne Rooney’s Birmingham City, with Jan Bednarek starring.

Saints’ took the lead within ten minutes after Taylor Harwood-Bellis headed it in from close range.

Carlos Alcaraz then also poked in just over ten minutes later after some lovely work from Kamaldeen Sulemana down the left hand side.

Birmingham did halve the deficit near the hour mark through loanee striker Jay Stansfield, giving Tooney’s side some hope to claim their first pints with him in charge.

But Adam Armstrong ended their hopes with finishing off after a knock down by Sam Edozie to give Saints all three points.

One player that starred at the back though was Jan Bednarek.

Journalist Alfie House gave the Polish centre back an eight out of ten rating in his player ratings, raving about his ‘colossal’ performance at the back.

“Most passes of any player in the first-half (64) as a regular conduit between Bazunu and the midfield. Helped limit Birmingham to just three hopeful shots in that time. Remained colossal throughout. Awarded man of the match in the stadium.”

Bednarek starring in Championship

Bednarek has taken the drop down to the Championship from the Premier League like duck to water.

He has made 13 appearances so far in the second tier, scoring one goal.

His passing on Saturday was also great with a 97% passing accuracy, completing 115 passes, the second highest out of any player.

He also made five clearances eight recoveries, an interception and a block.

He has started to develop a very decent partnership with Harwood-Bellis at the back, using his experience to help Hardwood-Bellis get better.
