Southampton have went through managers like they’re nothing recently, so we decided to look at the last five, and where they are now.
Martin Russell will be aware that in recent years, Southampton managers have been met with little patience with only Ralph Hasenhuttl remaining for an extended period of time.
With performances turning around though he has nothing to worry about.
But lets have a look anyway, back at the last five managers at St Marys’ and see where they are now.
Ruben Selles (17/02/23-30/06/23)
Ruben Selles had a few spells at the helm of Southampton as he consistently ended up being caretaker manager.
Last season he took over for one game in November which he won, and again in February which he won.
However his 100% record didn’t continue once he was handed the job on a full-time basis, with just 0.44 points per game from then on.
Selles now finds himself at Reading in League One, which shows he probably shouldn’t have been our manager in the first place.
Nathan Jones (10/11/22-11/02/23)
Nathan Jones was another manager who was in charge for part of last season.
Departing eventual promotion winners Luton mid-season looks like a terrible decision now.
Jones only lasted 14 games in charge of the Saints before getting the sack.
He now finds himself unemployed but will no doubt be looking to step back in at some point.
Ralph Hasenhüttl (06/12/18-07/11/22)
Ralph Hasenhuttl is the last long term manager to be at Southampton.
He took charge of 173 games average 1.26 points per game.
Extreme highs but also extreme lows including shipping nine goals a few times.
Hasenhuttl is also still unemployed following his departure last winter.
Mark Hughes (14/03/18-03/12/18)
Mark Hughes only managed Southampton for 27 games, departing after just nine months in the role.
He took a near four year hiatus following his sacking before joining Bradford.
Here he managed 82 games winning them 1.49 points per game but was sacked last week with the club low in League Two.
Mauricio Pellegrino (01/07/17-12/03/18)
It has been nearly five years since Mauricio Pellegrino was the boss at St Marys’.
Since then he has managed CD Leganes in Spain, Velez Sarsfield in Argentina and now U. de Chile in Chile’s top division.
At his last two clubs, relative success has followed with decent points per game tallies.
