Southampton are set to beat multiple teams to the signing of Taylor Harwood-Bellis from Manchester City, on loan for the season.

Leeds United and Leicester City have shown interest in the centre back but it appears that the Saints have won the race.

Despite the interest there is no reports of any firm offers and as a result, the defender hasn’t made a move.

It appears that Russell Martin wants to sign Harwood-Bellis as his side search for defensive depth.

He spent last season on loan at Burnley where he won the Championship, playing a key role under Vincent Kompany.

A permanent deal isn’t on the table it seems, but a loan deal could benefit all parties.

Should Southampton sign Taylor Harwood-Bellis?

With the injury to captain, Jack Stephens, a centre back in on loan would be ideal.

The Man City man would be more than ideal, he has Championship pedigree that would add to the Saints’ promotion push.

This would be a great signing and comes as a surprise that he hasn’t been snapped up already.

He is comfortable with the ball at his feet and likes passing out from the back.

In Martin’s system, playing with a high line, Harwood-Bellis would fit in perfectly.

Even with the signing of Mason Holgate on loan, Southampton still want another centre back for the rest of the season.

Stephens injury, Lyanco’s loan and Armel Bella-Kotchap leaving for Germany, a centre back is definitely needed at St Mary’s.

With Harwood-Bellis not getting any game time at City, a loan move this season could result in a future permanent move.

The signing of the Englishman could give the Saints a boost and fit in with the tactical style being used this season.

As a loan option, there is very little risk and makes complete sense.
