Southampton are close to signing Mason Holgate on loan from Everton as Russell Martin looks to add defensive reinforcements to his squad.

As reported by Sky Sports, Saints are keen on the move but remain at different stages in wage negotiations.

The Toffees are looking to sell, but Martin’s side is only interested in a year long loan.

Who is Mason Holgate?

Holgate started his career at Barnsley, making his debut for the club at 18 years old.

He was named young player of the year in 2015, resulting in a move to Premier League Everton.

Making his debut a year later against Tottenham, he has gone onto make 126 appearances.

Under Carlo Ancelotti Holgate arguably played his best football. Being utilised at centre back and in midfield, proving his versatility.

He has made over ten appearances for England youth sides, never being called up to the senior team however.

What would Mason Holgate add to Southampton?

Holgate will add versatility to the Saints’ defence and midfield as different players appear to be leaving the club.

With Armel Bella-Kotchap and Romeo Lavia set to leave, the Everton man could play a key role in the squad for Martin.

He likes playing long passes and build play from defence, fitting into the Saints’ style of play.

He spent half a season on loan in the Championship with West Bromwich Albion in 2019. Coming back from that, he played his best football.

A move to the Championship could spark the form which made him a favourite under Ancelotti.

If that is the case, the move could be beneficial for all parties as the Saints look for promotion at the first time of asking.
