Southampton see eight-figure bid ‘rejected’ for ‘special’ target, will take a ‘big fee’ to sign him

Russell Martin knows time is running out to get his Southampton squad ready for the Premier League with the transfer window shutting at 11pm on Friday.

Southampton have already made 11 first-team signings, but two defeats from two so far this season and no goals scored show Russell Martin needs more.

It looked as though Martin had seen his goalkeeper woes resolved, but a move for Feyenoord stopper Justin Bijlow frustratingly fell through after a failed medical.

It is not just a goalkeeper that Southampton need, though, with attacking players who can provide a creative spark high on the agenda before the transfer window closes.

Southampton see £10m bid rejected for West Brom winger Tom Fellows

In terms of attackers, Southampton have only added Ben Brereton Diaz and Cameron Archer to their ranks this summer; both of whom were relegated with Sheffield United last season.

That is a worry and is something the club look to be trying to address as soon as possible.

According to The Telegraph journalist John Percy, that has now seen Southampton attempt to sign West Brom winger Tom Fellows.

Percy posted on X: “West Brom have rejected a bid of around £10 million from Southampton for winger Tom Fellows.

“Offer regarded as well below his market value. Other Premier League clubs monitoring situation but West Brom will demand a big fee.”

Fellows move another risk for Southampton in the Premier League

Fellows is a talented player with a lot of potential given he is just 21.

Speaking on the youngster, West Brom manager Carlos Corberan said: “He’s a special talent. It’s important for the club to have young players with long contracts with us. We need to try to replicate it in more cases.”

The concern will be that this could be considered another signing who is viewed more as one for the future than a player who is ready to really make the difference at Premier League level.

Fellows has started the new season strongly with three assists in three Championship games, but has only five goals and seven assists in 49 West Brom appearances in his career so far.

A right-footed winger with pace to burn who prefers to play on the right does offer Martin something different to his current options as Fellows loves to get to the byline and cross into the box.

This is a profile of player Southampton currently lack, but Saints fans may be worried if Fellows is to be the only attacking addition between now and 11pm on Friday.
