£22m Southampton star told he has ‘got to deliver’ after slow start to Saints career

Southampton star Kamaldeen Sulemana has been told he has to start scoring goals by journalist Dean Jones.

Sulemana joined the club for £22 million at the end of the January transfer window, and scored two goals in 18 appearances as Saints finished bottom of the Premier League, and were subsequently relegated.

After failing to secure a move away in the summer with the likes of Everton heavily linked, Sulemana has made nine appearances so far this season, picking up three assists, but failing to score.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jones said that Sulemana should be scoring more goals than he is, and that if he does start doing so, Saints could push themselves higher up the Championship table.

“It’s not a great return so far from Sulemana. It’s not his fault that he is the club’s record signing. But, at the end of the day, if you are the club-record signing, you’ve got to deliver.

“When it comes down to bottom numbers, at the moment, he’s not done that. I think that it is important that Carlos Alcaraz and Sulemana start to come through with the goals that matter.

“Maybe, from a Southampton point of view, it’s at least encouraging that they’ve still got that potential to happen. They’ve managed to get themselves back up the table without these guys regularly finding the net, but if they can start finding goals, who knows how far Saints could push on?”

Sulemana has showed his quality this season

Sulemana has shown his quality on a few occasions this season for Russell Martin’s side.

He managed to get an assist in Saturday’s 3-1 win over Birmingham City, with some great work on the left hand side to get past the defender before squaring it for Alcaraz to tap in from close range.

The Ghana international has also shown though his temperament can cost him, when he was sent off in the 4-1 defeat at home to Leicester, despite it being rescinded.

Jones is right in saying Sulemana should be doing more, and if he can, Saints attack could be lethal going forward.
