Southampton manager Russell Martin confirmed why Flynn Downes was taken off during the second half of the draw with Preston North End.

Saints managed to draw 2-2 last night, scoring in the sixth minute of injury time to nick a point at Deepdale through an own goal from Preston striker Ched Evans.

Saints had taken the lead through Kyle Walker-Peters in the first half to go into half-time winning, but the Lilywhites cited two in quick succession early in the second half to take the lead, with Milutin Osmajic and Brad Potts being the goal scorers.

Downes was taken off in the 72nd minute in the second half, with Ryan Fraser being his replacement.

Martin told the Daily Echo after the game that Flynn Downes had a migraine, which is why he was taken off. Martin was also quick to praise the players who came off the bench and their impact on getting Saints a point.

“Flynn had to come off with a migraine so it’s a bit chaotic.

“That is why we have a squad with depth and some people really took the opportunity, some people will be frustrated – but the subs had a big impact again.”

Downes issue is not serious

Whilst it’s disappointing Downes had to come off, it should not be expected to be a serious issue that keeps him out for any longer than just one game.

The 24-year-old joined Saints in the summer on loan from West Ham United. He has made nine appearances in the Championship so far this season, getting one assist.
