Southampton have played a blinder as £18m ‘flop’ continues to impress

Southampton have not always had great transfer business, with one example of this being Paul Onuachu.

He is widely considered a flop on the south coast and only made a substitute appearance in the 3-1 EFL Cup defeat to Gillingham for manager Russell Martin, before departing in August to Turkish side Trabzonspor on loan for the season.

He joined Saints back in January for £18 million in order to help in their fight to avoid relegation from the Premier League, which ultimately failed as they finished rock bottom.

The striker has started in brilliant form in the Super Lig out on loan though, scoring four goals in seven games so far this season.

The Nigeria international is averaging a goal every 132 minutes for them, and scored the opener in their win over Fenerbahce on the weekend, with former Saint Dusan Tadic scoring both of Fenerbahce’s goals.

His form for the Turkish side will have definitely helped put him in the shop window for a number of clubs come the end of the season when his loan comes to an end.

Onuachu is surplus to requirements at Saints, and it is said he is ‘unlikely’ to ever play for the club again.

£18 million was a lot of money for the striker, but Saints will be hoping he can continue his form so he can not only be sold but so that Saints can recoup what they paid for him, in what could end up being a blinding move from the club.

He had been heavily linked with a potential move back to Genk, but ultimately the deal fell through with the Belgian side not being able to afford to pay the fee Saints asked for.
