Saints looking to sign Tottenham defender on loan

Southampton are showing an interest in Tottenham Hotspur defender Djed Spence, with a loan deal being discussed.

Spence joined Spurs a year ago from Middlesbrough, following excellent form on loan at play off winners Nottingham Forest.

At 23-years-old, the right back is yet to kick on in the capital and is looking to secure another move away.

He spent the second half of last season on loan at Rennes. He played well but hasn’t tempted them into a permanent deal.

Under Ange Postecoglou, it doesn’t appear he will make many more than the four appearances he made last season for Spurs.

After featuring in just 18 minutes of pre season action, and being omitted from the squad against Brentford, his future isn’t looking like Tottenham.

It appears that the Saints could offer Spence a new home for the season, in the league he made his name.

Should Southampton sign Djed Spence?

This one doesn’t make much sense for Southampton.

He is a good player and has lots of talent which could benefit Russell Martin’s squad if he was to sign.

Crunching the numbers, with James Bree, Kyle Walker-Peters, Romain Perraud and even Ryan Manning if needed, another right back, really?

Saints have been linked to Mason Holgate, who can also play right back when needed.

Walker-Peters has been linked to Premier League sides such as Aston Villa recently. Unless this deal happens, Spence would be a wholly unnecessary signing.

The England youth international is quick, strong and very technically gifted.

He offers great crossing ability to set up goals, matched with his own eye for goal.

He scored three and assisted five during his time in Nottingham.

A good player, no doubt about that. Just not what Southampton need.

They need to focus on replacing midfield out-goings James Ward-Prowse and Romeo Lavia more so.

This reinforced further by Will Smallbone’s injury.
