Southampton are interested in signing Sunderland winger Patrick Roberts.

According to Alan Nixon, Southampton are interested in signing the 26-year-old, but face competition from Roberts’ former club Celtic.

Sunderland may face a battle to keep hold of Roberts for the rest of this window, with less than twelve months left on his contract at the Stadium of Light.

Should Southampton sign Patrick Roberts?

Roberts joined Sunderland in January 2022 on a free transfer from Manchester City, helping the Black cats gain promotion from League One to the Championship.

He was then a key player last season for the club, in which Sunderland made the play-offs in their first season back in the second tier, scoring five goals and getting seven assists in 42 games.

He is known for joining Manchester City in 2015 from Fulham for a substantial fee at the time for an 18-year-old, before being loaned out to numerous clubs, including spending two and half seasons at Celtic.

He also spent time on loan at Sunderland’s rivals Middlesbrough, Derby County, Troyes of France and Girona in Spain.

As reported at the weekend, Southampton are set to be busy in the remaining two weeks of the transfer window as they look to bolster their squad for the rest of the season.

They have been linked with signing other attacking players as of late, like Granada’s Myrto Uzuni. Saints need more attacking options with a lack of them on the wings, and they are expected to be losing Che Adams soon.

It is unclear whether Sunderland would want to cash in on Roberts, or whether the player would want leave, whether that be for the South Coast or a return to Glasgow.

Sunderland will more than likely be desperate to keep hold of him as he has been such an important part of the Sunderland machine over the last few years.
