Southampton are interested in Aston Villa striker Cameron Archer.

According to the Daily Mail, Southampton would face competition for Archer’s signature, with fellow recently relegated Leeds United also interested.

Saints would like a striker to replace the potentially outgoing Che Adams, who reportedly looks set for a move to Premier League Everton.

The Toffees have been struggling so far this season to score goals, failing to score so far. Adams however is in red hot form, scoring three goals in three Championship games.

Archer is signed to a long-term contract at Villa, but could be available for a move.

After scoring four goals in 14 games for Villa, Archer scored 11 goals in 20 Championship games while on loan at Middlesbrough in the second half of last season.

Middlesbrough was the England under-21 international’s second Championship loan in as many years, after spending the second half of the 21/22 season on loan at Preston North End. He scored seven goals in 18 appearances for the Lilywhites.

This rumoured move comes as no surprise with the aforementioned potential departure of Adams. Southampton have been looking at plenty of attackers, with Joel Piroe and Myrto Uzuni also being linked.

Saints are reportedly looking to be busy in the last two weeks of the transfer window, as they are looking to use some the £100 million plus they have generated through selling some of their best players, with the likes of James Ward-Prowse, Romeo Lavia and Toni Livramento all leaving for substantial fees.

Southampton will have a lack of striking options if and when Adams does leave, with Adam Armstrong and Sekou Mara the only recognised options. Saints do also have January signing Paul Onuachu, but he has been linked with a potential return to Genk, with his former teammate Joseph Paintsil coming to St Mary’s in the other direction.
